A typical Vanitas composition with with Skull, Mirror Ball and a Flower Bouquet. The mirror ball is a symbol of vanity, the artist is reflected in the mirror, he appears to be holding a bubble another symbol of fragile existence. The bubble seem to go from the mirror ball to the outside. The skull is the universal symbol of death and carries a memento mori message reminding us of the transience of life. The butterfly was a favorite amongst Dutch painters because the many transformations in their life before becoming beautiful creations of nature.
