Description
Vanitas paintings were popular in XVII Century Holland, they also transcended to other times by French, German and other european painters. This particular piece theme is the arts and painting in particular. The sketch represents one of the three graces from Peter Paul Reubens iconic painting. It was normal for painters to emulate the great masters while studying. The sketch is meant as a symbol of a normal painter initiation, while the brushes and pallete are for later stages. The hourglass and watch are memento mori symbols reminding us that time is passing quickly.
