Description
Vanitas paintings were very popular during XVII Century United Provinces (Low Countries or Netherlands) These paintings included allegoric objects meant to remind the audience of the transience of life (memento mori). They were meant as reminders to live following the prevalent Calvinist moral code of XVII Century Dutch Republic. The skulls, hourglasses, extinguished candles, clocks or watches were all included in contrast with luxury objects, symbols of how short our existence and vanity was symbolized by the riches included. Vanitas paintings WERE NOT religious paintings, more like a moral compass reminder for the wealthy.
