A typical Vanitas arrangement with a Skull (Universal symbol of death and therefore a memento mori) spices, a gun, chinese porcelain, a mirror ball (symbol of vanity), a sailor contract bearing the VoC logo (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, in English - Dutch East India Company), a rich, oriental rug (used as table cover at the time) lemons, a sea shell from the Far East)( a rare object at the time) and the always present allegory to time, the watch.
Vanitas paintings were popular during the Dutch Golden Age, these were paintings with symbolic objects meant to remind the audience of the transience of life and that therefore it should be lived following the prevant moral code of XVII Century Dutch Republic
