Balthasar Van der Ast and his wife have been invited to the Vermeers for an afternoon discussion about the Art of Painting. The Vermeers have arranged a corner on the second floor of their house with a flower bouquet, fruit on a Chinese porcelain dish and some drinking vessels to resemble Van der Ast's favorite painting topics. Catharina Bolnes; Vermeer's wife replaced the usual map on their wall with one of Ambrosius Bosschaert paintings. Bosschaert; deceased by now, was Balthasar's brother in law, the Vermeers thought that the painting would honor his memory and his work.
