Description
It was master painter Willem Kalf who started this style of still life with opulent, luxurious objects. A Chinese porcelain bowl or Turkish rug were very expensive items in XVII Dutch Republic. Nobody knows why Kalf decided to do this type of paintings or what he wanted to express. That being said, he incorporated some vanitas or memento mori symbols in this masterpieces (watches). Living in XVII century Calvinist Dutch Republic, maybe he felt a bit of guilt.
