Description
Ontbijt or Little Breakfast - Roemer, Wan-li Dish Fruits and Sparragus
These still life style were popular in XVII Century Dutch Republic. Note, they do NOT represent a typical breakfast of the times, they were just called that way. Much has been written as to what their was their meaning, if any. Ointbijtjes and Banketjes were almost monochromatic, the palette used was very limited and all around the same. There is at least one theory out there that this was due to the higher price of pigments at the time, so by limiting the palette to fewer colors, the painter could then increase his profits.
