Ontbijt or Little Breakfast -This still life style was popular in XVII Century Dutch Republic. Note, they do NOT represent a typical breakfast of the times, they were just called that way. Much has been written as to what their was their meaning, if any. Ointbijtjes and Banketjes were almost monochromatic, the palette used was very limited and all around the same. There is at least one theory out there that this was due to the higher price of pigments at the time, so by limiting the palette to fewer colors, the painter could then increase his profits, that being said, ultramarine was the most expensive color ..Vermeer's favorite.
