Description
A typical Vanitas arrangement with a Skull (Universal symbol of death and therefore a memento mori) a violin and books, expressions of knowledge and culture. Dice, cards and a reflected joker in the mirror ball, all symbolizing the vice of the wealthy that could afford to spend money in games and gambling while enjoy leisure and idleness. A clay pipe and a tobacco box, objects that only the wealthy could possibly afford in XVII Century Dutch Republic.
Vanitas paintings were popular during the Dutch Golden Age, these were paintings with symbolic objects meant to remind the audience of the transience of life and that therefore it should be lived following God's laws.
The skulls, hourglasses, extinguished candles, clocks or watches were all symbols of how short our existence is. Vanitas paintings WERE NOT religious paintings, more like a moral compass reminder for the wealthy.
In an image like this, the message would be something like be aware that gambling, leisure, idleness and money are for the vain and we all die and meet our creator for judgement.
