Description
The Geographer is one of Vermeer's most recognizable paintings. Some believe that "the geographer" was none other than Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, who lived in Delft as well and is recognized as the Father of Microbiology. This rendering uses a typical XVII Century map using vignettes from Netherlandish cities of the time as background. Also, vignettes of famous Dutch painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Kalf and Jans Davidsz de Heem are included. The table is covered with books, map making paper, a world globe, a quill, a watch to log the time and a contract with the VOC (The Dutch East India Company) which was the first corporation in history. Since the Geographer is absent in the picture, this image is categorized as a still life instead of a genre piece.
The print is offered ONLY in a similar size of Vermeer's original painting and should be printed ONLY on canvas for a more realistic painting look.
